Divorce Counseling

Divorce Counseling
When couples get married, they don’t plan on getting divorced. Sometimes, during the course of marriage counseling, the couple can decide that their differences are irreconcilable and seek a divorce. Often, couples then terminate their marriage counseling, believing that it is no longer necessary. However, continued counseling can be a huge benefit as couples navigate the divorce process, especially if there are children involved. Counseling can make the difference between ending the marriage with acrimony or goodwill.

In divorce counseling, couples have a chance to talk through the process and share their feelings, preventing grievances from becoming bottled up. Couples may discover things about each other that they never knew. Sometimes, the desire for a divorce is not mutual, and it is essential that couples talk it through, especially if one partner believes they can still work things out. The purpose of divorce counseling is to serve as a healing process.

I strongly encourage our clients to continue their counseling even after divorce, whether separate or together. The complex feelings engendered by the divorce process may take time to sort out. I take my responsibility to you seriously, and hope to support your emotional process before, during, and after a divorce.

My job is not to tell you what to do, but to help you work through your options and support whatever decision you make. I will never tell you that you should or shouldn’t seek divorce. My goal is to establish a conduit of effective communication between couples, eliminating harsh language and verbal abuse in favor of a negotiation where each party respects the other.
